In a controversial dismissal, Maharashtra captain Ankit Bawne was declared out after he edged to second slip in a Ranji Trophy match against Services. However, replays showed that the ball had touched the ground, and the bizarre umpiring call prompted Maharashtra cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad to call out irregularities on social media.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is currently in Australia, leading India A in the unofficial Test against Australia A. He could muster only 15 runs in two innings in the MCG Test as his team stands on the brink of a whitewash.
However, Gaikwad is keeping a close eye on Ranji Trophy fixtures, including his team, Maharashtra. He recently voiced his concern about inferior umpiring standards after a major controversy erupted in the Maharashtra-Services fixture.
Ruturaj Gaikwad unhappy with umpiring in Ranji Trophy
Maharashtra stand-in captain Ankit Bawne edged to second slip, and on-field umpires upheld Services' appeal for a low catch. However, replays triggered a massive outrage. Slow motion replays revealed that the ball had touched the ground before carrying to the fielder, and umpires failed to spot that, leading to Bawne's unfair dismissal.
Meanwhile, Ruturaj Gaikwad supported his teammate all the way from Australia. He shared videos of the replay on his Instagram story and questioned umpiring standards. Gaikwad even shamed Services for appealing when they knew the ball had touched the ground.
"How can this be given out in a live game???. Shame to even appeal for a catch. Absolutely pathetic," Gaikwad wrote in his story.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, meanwhile, is struggling to prove himself in red-ball cricket. In two practice games against Australia, he scored a total of 20 runs in 4 innings. His contention for the Border Gavaskar series has fallen short, and the cricketer might have to wait longer for his due.
Suryakumar Yadav backs Gaikwad
Amid a string of failures, India's T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has expressed his support to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Ahead of the South Africa series, Yadav noted that the CSK captain is a fantastic player, and his consistency across all formats is noteworthy. However, Surya also acknowledged that many talented guys like Gaikwad are equally performing, which is leading to his snubs. Regardless, the captain is rest assured that Gaikwad will move the ranks, and his time will indeed come sooner than later.
