  • Ottis Gibson Delighted With Yorkshires Six Wicket Win Over Gloucestershire

Ottis Gibson delighted with Yorkshire's six wicket win over Gloucestershire

Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson has expressed his delight after the Steven Patterson-led unit kickstarted their 2022 County Championship campaign with a comprehensive 6-wicket win over Gloucestershire on Sunday (April 17).

Having taken a 149-run first-innings lead thanks to an excellent hundred from Harry Brook, Yorkshire were set a 4th innings target of 211 in 60 overs.

The target was achieved comfortably in the 50th over and at the loss of four wickets, with Dawid Malan and Brook hammering priceless half-centuries from Dawid Malan and Brook.

Following an impressive win, Gibson said that he was very proud of the manner in which the team gritted out over the course of 4 days of what he termed 'tough cricket'

"It was a good four days. It was tough cricket, especially yesterday when the game was there for us," said Gibson, as quoted by Yorkshire's website.

"I thought it was a good pitch. It offered a little bit of spin yesterday afternoon and today. I'm very proud of the way the lads stuck at it. Hopefully, we can carry on like that." he said.

Yorkshire has gone through a lot of turmoil following racism allegations by former cricketer Azeem Rafiq.

And Gibson is ecstatic that the team has started the season on a positive note.

"Of course, I'm delighted. But, at the same time, I'm also pleased for the squad. They've been through a lot in recent months and so on. To start the season with a win is a great thing for everybody concerned," he said.

However, Gibson is not getting ahead of himself as he knows that there is still a long way to go in the championship.

"I'm very pleased with how things turned out. But it's the first game of 14. So there's a long way to go," he said.

"It could have been a tricky chase. We got off to a good start. It was a bit slow, but we knew once we gathered momentum, we could kick on with the likes of Harry and Dawid." he said while acknowledging the contributions from Malan and Brook.

Gibson was full of praise for Brook following the young lad's back-to-back brilliant knocks, stating that he can continue churning out runs like this, then he can soon find himself representing the English Test team.

"He's an outstanding player. If he continues to play like that, he won't play many games for us, will he!" he joked.

"I've seen him for a month now. He's had a bit of a taste of white-ball cricket with England. If he continues to churn out runs like this, the way things are with the England set-up at the moment, somebody who could see themselves into that red ball squad." he added.

Yorkshire will play their second County Championship game against Northamptonshire from April 21.
