#OTD in 2019: Shaheen Afridi became the youngest bowler to take a five-wicket haul in WC

On this day in 2019, left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi etched his name into the history books by becoming the youngest bowler (19 years & 90 days) to pick a five-wicket haul in the ODI World Cup history. He finished with figures of 6/35 against Bangladesh and registered the best-ever bowling figures by a Pakistan bowler in the 50-overs World Cup game.

Ahead of this game, Pakistan were on the brink of elimination from the World Cup, owing to their lower net run rate than the New Zealand team. On the other hand, Bangladesh had no chance of qualification, with only three victories in eight appearances.

The Sarfaraz Ahmed-led side won the toss and opted to bat first at Lord's. Although Fakhar Zaman (13) was dismissed early, the partnerships of Imam Ul Haq and Babar Azam were pleasing to the cricket fans.

Imam was dismissed for 100 in a hit-wicket dismissal, while Babar Azam just fell four runs short of a century. In the middle order, Imad Wasim hit 43 off 26 to propel Pakistan to a total of 315. Mustafizur Rahman was the pick of the bowlers with five scalps for Bangladesh.

Then, Mohammad Amir sent Soumya Sarkar (22) to the pavilion in the sixth over. Then, in the 11th over, Afridi delivered a slower ball to stun Tamim Iqbal (8) and bowled him.

Experienced Mushfiqur Rahim made his way back for 16 off 19. However, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan's partnership gradually churned out runs briskly.

Afridi again used the slower ball to Das, who was caught off-guard and gave an easy catching opportunity to the silly mid-off area in the 29th over. A few overs later, the young pacer got an edge from Shakib's willow, which was caught by Sarfaraz, which left Bangladesh reeling at 154/5.

Then, Afridi dismissed Mohammad Saifuddin, Mahmudullah, and Rahman, with the last two being accurately darted yorkers. As a result, the Mashrafe Mortaza-led side could only score 221 and lost by 94 runs.

After the culmination of this game, Pakistan finished in the fifth spot in the points table and could not qualify for the semifinals.
