After the big suspense over the Indian skipper for the T20 World Cup 2024 got over with Rohit Sharma confirmed, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah announced Hardik Pandya as his deputy for the mega-event to be held in June.

The big news came from Rajkot, where many BCCI and SCA dignitaries were stationed to attend the renaming of Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium to Niranjan Shah Stadium ahead of the third India-England Test.

While speaking to the media at the event, Shah broke the news and instilled his backing towards the side's senior player, while adding that Pandya's appointment as skipper would have put them in jeopardy if gets injured during the World Cup.

"At this point in time, Rohit is an all-format captain. It is a collective decision, and the selectors are fully aligned on the matter. Hardik Pandya will retain his position as vice-captain for the T20 World Cup. Consider if Hardik gets injured, as he did in the previous World Cup. In such a scenario, who should we entrust with the leadership responsibility," Shah said.

To the unversed, there has been quite a lot of stir on social media over the choice of captain the Indian management will go ahead with, considering Rohit was out of action for about a year or so from the shortest format until he made his return during the T20I series against Afghanistan in January.

In his absence, Pandya was in charge of the side on most occasions if fit, but now, things will not be altered, as echoed by the board secretary.

The Indian team will directly depart for the USA and the Caribbean after the completion of the Indian Premier League in May, as the 20-team event will be played from June 1st to June 29th.
