In a shocking development, Afghanistan's star pacer Naveen-ul-Haq on Wednesday announced he won't play in the 50-over format any longer after the forthcoming ODI World Cup, set to get underway on October 5 in India. However, the 24-year-old, who plays for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), will continue to wear the national jersey to participate in the T20Is.

Naveen has played seven ODIs thus far, and picked up 14 wickets at an average of 25.42. He last played a 50-over fixture for the country back in January 2021, against Ireland in Abu Dhabi. His debut match in the format was against Bangladesh, way back in September 2016.

"It has been an absolute honour to represent my country would like to announce my retirement from ODI format at end of this World Cup and will continue to wear this blue jersey in t20 cricket for my country it hasn’t been an easy decision to make but to prolong my playing career had to take this tough decision would like to thank @afghanistancricketboard And all my fans for their support and unwavering love," Naveen posted on Instagram to announce the news.

After getting into a heated argument with Virat Kohli during the IPL last year, Naveen became embroiled in a lot of controversy. Since then, he has gained considerable popularity in India, primarily in a bad way.

Alongside impressive numbers in the ODIs, Naveen’s T20I records speak volumes as well, having scalped 34 wickets in 27 matches at an average of 20.70.

Afghanistan will begin their World Cup campaign against Bangladesh on October 6 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala.
