Swashbuckling West Indies and Rajasthan Royals' batter Shimron Hetmyer has termed his wife as his biggest coach and harshest critic.
Hetmyer has been in rich vein of form this season and the southpaw has revealed that he is strictly adhering to his wife's advice to spend some time at the crease before going hammer and tongs.
Speaking to Star Sports ahead of Rajasthan Royals' encounter against the Kolkata Knight Riders, Hetmyer revealed the mantra of his success in the IPL in the last two seasons.
The southpaw admitted that he was guilty of not giving himself time at the crease during the initial phase of his IPL career. But since the last season, he has made a concerted effort to do so and it's reflected in his performances.
Hetmyer said, "It's about just giving myself the chance. For the first two years I didn't really give myself a chance the base to get set. This year and in the last year, I said to myself to give a chance to know what the conditions are before getting going. My wife has been my biggest coach and my harshest critic and she told me to give myself a couple of balls to judge what's happening and then take off.”
Hetmyer's fellow teammate Jos Buttler has been in a rich vein of form this season.
The Lancashire cricketer has already racked up in excess of 500 runs with as many as three hundreds.
When asked about the one shot that he'd like to borrow from Buttler's repertoire, Hetmyer picked the reverse sweep.
"I want to learn how to reverse-sweep from Jos Buttler. I am practising that in the nets but only getting hit. And the scoop also. When I am batting with him, he makes things easier. Thank god I am not a bowler bowling at the Wankhede, it's a good ground for batters,” Hetmyer added.
Hetmyer has smashed 260 runs in 10 innings at an average of 65 and a strike rate of 150.81 and the Royals will hope he continues with the good work in the second half of the season.
