Mondil Khumalo, SA U-19 star remains comatose

The SA Under-19 star continues to be in a comatose condition after undergoing his third surgery following his physical assault. Hailing from Umlazi, Mondil was brutally attacked early on Sunday (May 29) outside the Dragon Rise Pub in Bridgwater, Bristol.

The 20-year-old is currently admitted to Southmead Hospital and was operated on for the third time on Wednesday. According to news18, a blood clot was removed from the player’s brain, causing high blood pressure.

Local police have arrested a 27-year-old man, who has since been released but continues to be under investigation.

Mondil suffered a head injury in the brawl after celebrating his side North Petherton's victory on Sunday.

This is the fast bowler's first overseas assignment as a professional with North Petherton. He is the club’s leading wicket-taker this season, with 15 at an average of 14.93.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) acted swiftly and arranged passports for his family in coordination with the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

CSA Chief Executive Officer, Pholetsi Moseki commented: “CSA is deeply saddened by the unfortunate assault inflicted on Mondli, who has been a shining star in the CSA U19 setup. We share in the Khumalo family’s pain and anguish and have consequently dedicated senior officials to offer whatever support that might be required by the Khumalo family."

"So far collaboration with KZN Cricket Inland and various stakeholders has yielded positive results, which will hopefully lighten the Khumalo family’s challenges at this difficult time. In the meanwhile, we are encouraged that Mondli is now stable, following emergency surgery. "

"CSA calls on South Africans to pray for Mondli’s speedy recovery and thanks all those who came forward for support.”

Khumalo represented South Africa in the ICC U-19 World Cup 2022, and played ten one-day games.

He played two youth Tests against England in July 2018. The right-handed bowler recently received a high-performance contract from Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland, a first-class cricket team.
