Mohammed Shami shattered New Zealand’s World Cup 2023 dream by subduing their in-form batting line-up in the semifinals. The Indian speedster claimed seven Kiwi wickets in their recent knockout stalemate at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, and was fittingly adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts.

Remarkably, Shami scaled several bowling records through his match-winning spell. Apart from becoming the fastest bowler in World Cup history to complete 50 wickets, the cricketer also topped former fast bowler Ashish Nehra for a huge India record at the grandest stage of the sport.

Mohammed Shami claims India’s best World Cup figures

Mohammed Shami entrapped the key New Zealand wickets of Devon Conway, in-form Rachin Ravindra, captain Kane Williamson and centurion Daryl Mitchell before polishing off the tail to finish his spell at 7-57.

His match-winning performance also marked his career-best ODI figures, and extended his World Cup 2023 tally to 23 wickets, thus taking him past tournament’s leading wicket-taker Adam Zampa. Additionally, the cricketer became the fastest in World Cup history to get to 50 wickets and he is currently the recipient of most five-wicket hauls in World Cup matches.

Apart from the aforementioned records, Mohammed Shami also slapped the best bowling figures for an Indian bowler in a World Cup match, bettering former speedster Ashish Nehra for his match-winning spell against England in the 2003 edition of the tournament.

Back in 2003, Nehra flattened England with figures of 6-23 in Durban to lead India to an 82-run win. Shami, who finished with 7-57 in the 2023 semifinal, now holds the all-time record of registering the best World Cup figures among Indian bowlers.

The Indian speed legend will now turn up for side in the upcoming 2023 World Cup on November 19. The much-awaited contest will be hosted by the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
