Rohit Sharma, the five-time IPL winning captain is set to be retained by Mumbai Indians ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025 according to a report by Indian Express. Along with Rohit, the skipper of the last season, Hardik Pandya and Indian superstars, Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah are also set to be retained.

However, Ishan Kishan is not in the retention plans and according to the report, the franchise would try him to buy in the mega auction. Tim David though is likely to be retained through RTM card. All franchises have been allowed to retain six players and they can do it before the mega auction or through RTM. The last date to announce the retention list is 31st October. Akash Madhwal is the front-runner to be retained as uncapped player at a capped price of 4 Crore.

Doubt Over Mumbai Indians' Captain For IPL 2025

There is no clarity on who will lead the franchise though and who will be the first retention of the franchise. The franchise and Hardik Pandya faced lot of criticism in the last season when the all-rounder replaced Rohit Sharma as captain. Hardik has turned things around with his skills in international cricket, but Suryakumar Yadav is now the Indian captain and he is also an option for Mumbai Indians apart from Hardik and Rohit.

Mumbai Indians finished last in the 2024 season and have brought back Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach in place of Mark Boucher. Also, Paras Mhambrey is back in the coaching staff as bowling coach and with the franchise is looking keen to get their house in order ahead of mega auction for IPL 2025.
