IPL 2024 To Be Played Outside India? Governing Council Awaits For Election Commission

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up for its most cherished and lucrative tournament, the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), after successfully concluding the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

While the IPL 2024 mini-auction is due on December 19 in Dubai, the hosting of the tournament remains in jeopardy.  With India heading into General Elections next year, the BCCI might face security and logistical troubles, given that the state machinery will be busy in polls.

As reported by MyKhel, the IPL Governing Council is yet to make a concrete decision on whether the competition should be held in India or overseas, and thus await the official announcement by the Election Commission of India (ECI)2 for formal notification of the voting dates in India.

The ECI will announce the dates sometime in February. The IPL 2024 could either be completed and shifted outside India or be held across two legs, one in India and one abroad or be completely played on home soil.

This won't be the first time that BCCI will shift the IPL outside India. In 2014, IPL was played in two phases, the first in UAE and the second in India.

However, despite the election in 2019, the BCCI ran the IPL smoothly in India and refrained from moving elsewhere.  The IPL 2009 edition took place in South Africa, as the tournament was clashing with the general elections.

Speculations suggests the IPL 2024 edition will get underway from March 24 and will go on until May 26 acting as a perfect fodder for players to prepare for T20 World Cup 2024 in June.
