IPL 2022 | Rajasthan Royals to pay tribute to Shane Warne in their game against Mumbai Indians

Rajasthan Royals (RR) are all set to pay a special tribute to Australia’s spin wizard Shane Warne. The Australian veteran led the franchise to their maiden and only T20 title in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.

Under Warne, the Royals defeated MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by three wickets in the final to lift the prestigious trophy. RR will be playing against Mumbai Indians at the DY Patil Stadium, where they won the title 14 years back.

Warne left the world last month after a suspected heart attack, and thus the Jaipur-based franchise has decided to celebrate his legacy. He is one of the greatest to have ever played the gentlemen’s game, with 708 and 293 wickets from 145 Tests and 194 One Day Internationals, respectively.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has also supported the team’s decision. It is learned that the Rajasthan Royals players will have special SW23 initials on their jerseys.

Also, a tribute gallery has been formed in a special area at the DY Patil Stadium. In addition, Shane Warne’s brother Jason will be a part of the grand celebrations in Navi Mumbai.

Rajasthan Royals have released a special statement on their official social media handles for the same.

“We will be celebrating the life and career of Shane Warne - the first Royal and a legend of the game, in our upcoming match against Mumbai Indians.

It was at the DY Patil Stadium in 2008 where the charismatic Warnie led an unfancied but spirited team of Royals to become the first-ever champions of the IPL. Now, with his memories in our hearts, we go back to the same venue to commemorate the Spin King for his immense contribution to cricket and to our lives here at the Royals.

Not only was Warnie a once-in-a-generation match-winner, but also someone who touched innumerable lives and inspired generations of cricketers. His passion for the game and his craft, the love and warmth he had for his family, friends, teammates, and even rivals, and his quest to give back to the game he so dearly loved - these were qualities that made him stand out. This is what made him a true Royal,” the statement by Royals read.

Chris Woakes signs two-year contract extension with Warwickshire

England's bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes has renewed his commitment with his home county Warwickshire, as he penned a two-year contract extension and will now remain with the Edgbaston-based club until 2024. Woakes has bagged success across all three formats with the club, winning two County Championships and as many One-Day Cups, along with a T20 Blast title with the Bears. He will be looking to contribute more as Warwickshire look to defend their County Championship title in the ongoing season. The English international was part of the ICC World Cup-winning squad in 2019. The gritty all-rounder has represented 'The Three Lions' in 45 Tests, 106 ODIs and 16 T20Is. "It was always a dream of mine to take to the field at Edgbaston for the Bears when I started playing the game as a youngster," Woakes said on Warwickshire's website. "I love the club and feel incredibly proud every time that I put on the Bear and Ragged Staff and take to the field for my home county," he added. "Playing a part in the final stages of last year's Championship success was a very proud moment for me. Whilst we're the reigning county champions, there's so much potential for this squad to do more. We have some of the best young players in the game coming through our pathway, and I'm very keen to support their development and hopefully ensure that there can be a few more trophy wins in the coming years," the 33-year-old reckoned. Woakes is expected to return to action for the Bears during their home fixture against Northamptonshire, scheduled to start on May 12. Paul Farbrace, the Director of Warwickshire club, expressed his excitement about Woakes renewing his contract with the club as he said the Birmingham-born would be a terrific addition to the club. "As a county which is committed to developing our young cricketers, it's vital that they have someone like Chris to talk to and aspire to what he has achieved. We're very much aware that Chris is going to play so much more cricket for England across all three formats," Farbrace said. The England all-rounder has played in several leagues all around the world. He featured for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While in the Big Bash League (BBL), he has represented Sydney Thunder. In the upcoming edition of The Hundred, Woakes will don the jersey of Birmingham Phoenix.
