IPL 2022: Hardik Pandya, Shreyas Iyer in race to lead Ahmedabad franchise

India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is likely to lead the newly-formed Ahmedabad franchise in the IPL 2022. The right-hander was earlier not retained by Mumbai Indians. The other major contender for the post is Shreyas Iyer. The former Delhi Capitals skipper is a free agent now after not being retained by the franchise ahead of IPL 2022.

Pandya who has been a part of the Mumbai-based franchise from the time he made his debut in the IPL, has featured in 92 matches for the side and has scored 1476 runs at a strike-rate of over 153. Apart from this, he has also picked up 42 wickets during the course.

The Ahmedabad franchise had earlier received the clearance from the BCCI officially and got the much-awaited Letter of Intent from the board.

The team is set to have Vikram Solanki as the Director of cricket while Ashish Nehra will be the head coach. Apart from these two, former South Africa batter, Gary Kristen will be the mentor of the side.

U19 World Cup 2022: Afghanistan team's arrival in West Indies delayed due to visa related issues

There has been a delay in the arrival of Afghanistan’s U19 team in West Indies for the World Cup due to visa related issues. The ICC in a statement has said that the body is making the attempts to resolve the problems. "We have been working together with the Afghanistan Cricket Board and relevant stakeholders to try and find a resolution to the problem and allow the team to travel," ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley said. "In the meantime, we have rescheduled the warm-up fixtures to ensure the teams in the region are able to continue their preparation ahead of the start of the tournament on 14 January." Afghanistan were scheduled to play England on January 10, 2022 at Warner Park and were then slated to play the UAE at St Paul's on Wednesday (January 12). The England UAE sides will now play each other on January 11, 2022 at Conaree Cricket Centre.

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli confirmed on Monday, January 10 that he is fit and ready to play in the third Test against South Africa, starting January 11th at the Newlands in Cape Town. However, he also said that Mohammed Siraj will not be available for selection. “Mohammed Siraj is not match-ready to play the third Test, we can't take the risk,” Kohli said in a virtual press conference on Monday. "I am absolutely fit," he added while saying that injuries are a natural occurrence and we have to balance it out. While Siraj had sustained a hamstring injury during the first innings, Kohli missed the game due to a back spasm. Kohli spoke on other topics as well, including how Rishabh Pant needs to take responsibility for his actions. "I think Rishabh Pant will learn from his mistakes and come out as a better cricketer. We did have a chat with him and I'm sure he is a matured cricketer to learn from his mistakes," Kohli said. Pant had got out playing a nothing shot, a shot that could be best described as self-destructing. He played that shot at a time when India needed him to stay at the crease. The three-match series is squared at 1-1 at the moment and it is a golden opportunity for India to win its first-ever bilateral Test series against the Proteas away from home.

The Ahmedabad franchise has officially got the clearance from the BCCI and has received the much-awaited Letter of Intenet from the board. The franchise will have former England batsman Vikram Solanki as the Director of Cricket while former India pacer Ashish Nehra will perform the duties of the head coach. The franchise was stuck in a fiasco as it was not getting the Letter of Intenet even after winning the bid to own the Ahmedabad side in the upcoming edition of the IPL. The issue was with the ownership of the CVC Capital ventures, the company that won the bid. Gary Kristen who was India’s head coach during the side’s 2011 World Cup-winning triumph will be the mentor of the side and if the reports are to be believed then Shreyas Iyer is likely to lead the side in the upcoming edition. Iyer has earlier led Delhi Capitals in the IPL and the Delhi-based franchise made it to the final under his captaincy. DC eventually ended as the runners-up. The franchise will play its matches at the largest cricket stadium in the country, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad.
