Mumbai Indians' captain Rohit Sharma's disastrous IPL form continued on Thursday (April 21) night as the stylish right-handed opener was dismissed for a second-ball duck by Chennai Super Kings' left-arm seamer Mukesh Chowdhary.
As a result, Sharma has added a dubious record of registering the most number of ducks in the league's history against his name.
This was Rohit's 14th duck of his IPL career and he has leapfrogged Ajinkya Rahane, Piyush Chawla, Harbhajan Singh, Mandeep Singh, Parthiv Patel, Ambati Rayudu, all of whom have 13 ducks against their name.
It was a soft dismissal and Rohit would be very disappointed when he goes back and checks the replays. It all happened on the second delivery of MI's innings when Sharma tried to flick a full-length delivery on the leg-side.
What happened next was that the bat turned on impact and the ball proceeded to lob straight to Mitchell Santner at mid-on.
Sharma has had a poor time in the IPL in the last 4-5 seasons but his underperformance this year has come in the spotlight more because Mumbai have lost all their games so far.
On Thursday, the five-time champions would have hoped for a good start from their misfiring opening duo but it didn't prove to be the case as not only Rohit but Ishan Kishan also failed to trouble the scorers.
The southpaw played down the wrong line and proceeded to york himself on a fullish length delivery from Mukesh.
It went from bad to worse for Mumbai as Dewald Brevis followed suit for a 7-ball 3 to give Mukesh his third wicket.
But Suryakumar Yadav has once again proved to be the breath of fresh air for the beleaguered former champions. The stylish right-hander announced himself with a disdainful on-drive against Choudhary and has since then played plenty of delightful strokes.
At the time of writing, MI had moved on to 74/4 at the end of the 11th over.
As far as Rohit is concerned, the most-successful IPL skipper has managed just 114 runs in 7 games this season and he will be desperate to turn around his fortunes in the upcoming fixtures.
