The remainder of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) which is scheduled to take place in UAE from September 19 will host fans in stadiums, the IPL governing council said in a statement.
The IPL governing council marked the development as a "momentous occasion" and informed that the sale of the tickets will begin on September 16 on the official website of the tournament—www.iplt20.com.
Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, this will mark the first instance when fans will be able to have a glimpse of the marquee event from the stands. Both the first part of the 14th edition that took place in India and the 2020 edition of the league that took place in the UAE had taken place behind closed doors.
“The VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 resumes with the five-time champions and current title holders Mumbai Indians taking on three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 19,” an IPL statement read.
“This match will be a momentous occasion as IPL will welcome the fans back to the stadiums after a brief hiatus owing to the Covid-19 situation,” it added.
The first part of the IPL 2021 was earlier suspended on May 4 after the emergence of Covid-19 cases in multiple franchises.
Delhi Capitals were sitting at the helm of the points table with 12 points and six wins from 8 matches before the tournament was halted while defending champions MI were at number four spot with four wins and 8 points from seven matches.
