Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was one of the chief architects in Kolkata Knight Riders’ win over MS Dhoni and Co. on Wednesday. The 29-year-old conceded mere 28 runs and picked up the key wicket of Dhoni to derail Chennai’s chase.
The tweaker later revealed that he used to go to M.A. Chidambaram Stadium to watch the former India skipper bat. In a clip uploaded by Indian Premier League, Rahul Tripathi was seen asking Varun if he felt any sort of pressure while bowling to Dhoni. The spinner replied saying that he had to almost pinch himself to get back to reality.
“Yeah, yeah, because three years back, I used to come to the Chepauk stands and sit with the crowd and I used to just come to see MS Dhoni batting. Now, I bowled against him; it was a surreal moment for me. After the match, I took a picture with Dhoni sir,” Varun Chakravarthy said.
In the 17th over of the chase, Dhoni tried to have a go at the bowler but ended up missing the ball completely. Having hit a boundary in the previous delivery, the veteran batter backed himself but this time around Varun castled his stumps.
KKR defended 168 and won the game by 10 runs. The inclusion of Varun has been a success for the Knight Riders this season. He has picked up four wickets from as many games at an economy of 7.93
