Team India won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title by outclassing New Zealand in a hard-fought final. In the process, Indian captain Rohit Sharma attained an unwanted toss streak. Moreover, star English batter Harry Brook has pulled himself out of an IPL season for the second year in a row.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, March 9.
India Pip New Zealand To Lift 2025 Champions Trophy
Team India outclassed New Zealand in the final to lift the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title at the Dubai International Stadium. New Zealand won the toss and conjured a competitive 251-7 from 50 overs after overcoming early jitters. Daryl Mitchell (63 off 101) and Michael Bracewell (53* off 40) cracked contrasting half-centuries to fuel New Zealand’s total in the slog overs.
For India, spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each in the innings while Ravindra Jadeja conceded just 30 in his 10-over spell. In the run-chase, Indian opener Rohit Sharma blasted a quick 76 at the top before three quick wickets tilted the tide back in New Zealand’s favour. Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel and unbeaten KL Rahul all subsequently chipped in with valiant runs to take India home with an over to spare.
Rohit Sharma, India Attain Unwanted Toss Streak
While Team India won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy title, the ‘Men in Blue’ lost its 15th consecutive toss in ODIs. India’s unwanted streak started back in November 2023 by losing the 2023 World Cup toss to Australian skipper Pat Cummins. Moreover, Indian captain Rohit Sharma himself accounted for 12 of those toss losses, including five in the recently-concluded Champions Trophy in Dubai.
In doing so, Sharma equaled former West Indies skipper Brian Lara for losing most consecutive tosses in a row in ODI cricket.
Harry Brook Pulls Out Of IPL 2025 For Delhi Capitals
English cricketer Harry Brook has pulled out of the IPL 2025 season for the Delhi Capitals franchise. The 26-year-old now finds himself at a risk of suffering a two-year ban from participating in the IPL. Notably, the cricketer also opted himself out of IPL 2024 last year. While Brook has not cited any reason behind his recent pull out, he is currently a frontrunner to replace Jos Buttler as England’s next white-ball national captain.
Matthew Wade Joins Gujarat Titans As Assistant Coach
The Gujarat Titans franchise roped in former Australian cricketer Matthew Wade as its assistant coach for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. Wade also served the Gujarat Titans as a player back in IPL 2022 and 2024. Wade will be working alongside head coach Ashish Nehra, batting coach Parthiv Patel and other assistant coaches Aashish Kapoor and Narender Negi. The Gujarat Titans franchise is set to play its opening match of the IPL 2025 season against Punjab Kings on March 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
AB De Villiers Slaps 28-Ball Century
Former South African cricketer AB de Villiers bludgeoned a 28-ball century for Titans Legends against Bulls Legends in the Taste of SuperSport Park League. The legendary batter smashed 15 massive sixes and seven boundaries in his innings, as the 41-year-old rolled back the years, taking fans on a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
