India had a horrible start to their second innings in the ongoing fourth Test as England managed two early breakthroughs. Chris Woakes rattled the visitors with twin strikes, getting prized scalps of Yashasvi Jaiswal and B Sai Sudharsan on consecutive deliveries.

What Is India's Most Embarrassing Defeat In Tests?

After being put into bat first, India posted 358 runs on the board, riding on valuable fifties from Jaiswal, Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant. However, England swung the game completely in their favour, with Joe Root and Ben Stokes hammering sensational centuries.

Apart from the talismanic duo, Ollie Pope struck 71 runs, as England racked up 669 runs in their first innings, taking a substantial lead of 311 runs. Thus, India have an uphill task of avoiding an innings defeat, for which they must score at least 311 runs on a challenging day 4 pitch.

In such a scenario, here are India's biggest margin of losses in Tests as they stare at a humiliating innings defeat at Old Trafford

India's Biggest Defeats In Tests

  • Innings and 336 runs vs West Indies, Kolkata, 1958
  • Innings and 285 runs vs England, Lord's, 1974
  • Innings and 244 runs vs England, The Oval, 2014
  • Innings and 242 runs vs England, Birmingham, 2011
  • Innings and 239 runs vs Sri Lanka, Colombo, 2008

As mentioned above, India's horrendous defeat in the Kolkata Test against the West Indies way back in 1958 is still their most humiliating loss in Test cricket. Meanwhile, the Test loss by an innings and 285 runs at Lord's is India's worst-ever performance against England in the format.

So, if the visitors continue to crumble and get bowled out for less than 100, they might register their one of the most shambolic defeats against the Englishmen in Test history.
