Yash Dhull, who led India to the fifth U-19 World Cup title in the West Indies earlier this year, has been appointed as the "state icon" of Delhi by the Election Commission of India to promote voting awareness among the youth.
The Election Commission of India reckons that appointing Dhull as the state icon will motivate the younger generation to understand the value of voting in a democratic country like India.
The 19-year old has also agreed to participate in college-level voter awareness events to make the youth understand the importance of their votes.
"[Yash] Dhull will work in close coordination with the office of the CEO to enhance voter registration and electoral participation amongst the youth," the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer said in a statement.
Delhi CEO Ranbir Singh also called the flamboyant right-handed batter and congratulated him for his outstanding achievement at the U-19 World Cup. Dhull, in reply, assured Ranbir Singh to provide all possible support to strengthen the electoral participation of the youth.
The 19-year old is highly skilled and was one of four Under-19 players from the current India batch to earn an IPL contract, heading to Delhi Capitals for INR 50 Lakhs in the IPL 2022 mega auction earlier this year.
After a successful run at the Under-19 World Cup, Dhull made a spectacular first-class debut, scoring 113 and 113* in his first game, and followed it with an unbeaten double-hundred two matches later. He averages 119.75 in three games and is yet to make his List-A debut.
