IND vs ENG | 3rd ODI: Firebrand England look to end tour on high as India garrisons its defence

It was expected that England would come strong at the Indian team right from the word go. For quite some time now, it has been the way England play and they continued to do so. Losing the tosses did cost India, but not as much as seeing its spinners being flabbergasted by the might and sheer aggression of the English batters. The shock didn’t sit well with them as both Krunal Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav were taken to cleaners in both the games by the Englishmen.

In the first game, India managed to win it, only after England decided to commit a harakiri as when even less than run a ball was required, none of the players settled down and played sensibly. In the second game though, it wasn’t even needed as Jonny Bairstow, who is probably going through the form of his life in ODI cricket made sure that even when the collapse struck, the match was done and dusted by then.

English batting: The real danger for Team India

In this final game, Bairstow and his opening partnership with Jason Roy remain the major concern for team India. Even Ben Stokes is going through a pink patch and thus Indian bowlers would once again have to be on their toes to make sure that the match doesn’t get out of their hands pretty early in the contest.

It has been a proven fact that the ball that goes away from the right-hander troubles the English openers and thus after Kuldeep and Pandya both being smacked, the Indian skipper might just want to test Yuzvendra Chahal on this pitch as well.

Scoring big is the only way out

Although captain Virat Kohli might say as much as he wants that the team is good at defending totals. But he can say that only after losing the toss, just to boost up the morale. But the fact remains that Team India’s strength is batting. If given a chance, Kohli too would have chased in the last two games. As toss is not in anybody’s hands thus the Indian batters need to make sure that even if they bat first, they post imposing totals above 350. Maybe take a cue from their opponents on how to attack from the word go.

India vs England: Match Details

Match No.-03

Date and Time: March 28, 01:30 PM IST, 08:00 AM IST

Venue: Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune

Broadcast: Star Sports and Hotstar

Pitch Conditions

In the last game, a fresh pitch was used. In this game, however, the pitch might just remain the same s the gap between the two matches has been just one day. Anyways, the pitch at Pune is going to be batting friendly as it has always been and thus the team batting first need to be aggressive and get something above 350 to challenge the chasers.  There have been no help at all for spinners in the night, although Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali have been on the favourable side of the economy graph, getting the advantage of bowling n the day when the pitch is still dry.

Team News

India

The only change that looks evident in the Indian side is the exclusion of Kuldeep and Chahal coming in his place. Res al the players who have been given a chance have performed extremely well and disturbing the combinations is not how Kohli operates anyways.

Strongest XI

Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul (WK) Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Shardul Thakur, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal

England

The English team, even after having their two main players (Eoin Morgana and Sam Billings) out of the squad due to injury and resting Mark Wood managed to win a game with much ease. Thus in the next game too, the team might remain unchanged. The one change that England could and should do is to bring in either Mark Wood or test Matt Parkisnosn in place of Tom Curran as he has been very expensive.

Strongest XI

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes, Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler(wk), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Mark Wood/ Matt Parkinson, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley

IPL 2021 | Team Preview: New troops, old fan base, RCB line up to conquer throne

It was 2018 when I got the first opportunity to cover an IPL match. Royal Challengers Bangalore were up against the Delhi franchise who were then known as Delhi Daredevils at the Arun Jaitley Stadium (then called Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium). We have often seen that the home side is thoroughly backed by the crowd at the other venue but this was not the case when DD locked horns with RCB in Delhi. To my surprise, the RCB team had more support from the crowd in comparison to the home side. Captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers stitched a vital partnership and won the match for their team. Whil AB and Kohli won the match for RCB, the fans in the stands celebrated the visitors’ victory. Such is the excitement when the RCB team takes the field. But is the team only there in the league to produce some fantastic performances, attract the crowd and then bow out of the tournament. Will this excitement and leisure be ever enough to tell the caliber that the team has? Well, as a Bangalore fan, I myself joke about how this team is all about entertaining the crowd only. But somewhere deep down, I too feel sad that the team doesn’t have a single IPL trophy in their kitty despite making it to the finals thrice. I feel sad about how the franchise let go off someone like Chris Gayle, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Mandeep Singh. An interesting fact about the above mentioned players is that all of them now play for Punjab Kings. But the bygones and bygones. The fans can’t crib about what has been lost while the management now needs to focus on the upcoming season. The money has been spent on the players in the mini auctions and now is the time to make new strategies. The plans that will work. RCB pay big to overseas players Bangalore spent some big amount of money on Glenn Maxwell, Kyle Jamieson and Daniel Christian while also bought some uncapped players like Sachin Baby, Rajat Patidar, Mohammed Azharuddeen and Suyash Prabhudessai. Maxwell in fact became one of the costliest buys in the IPL 2021 mini auctions after RCB snapped him for a sum of Rs. 14.25 Cr. Jamieson too received some big amount of money after he was bought for Rs.15 crore while Christian went to the franchise for Rs.4.8 crore. While RCB spent a huge amount of money on the foreign recruits, they played it smart when it came to the uncapped players. Sachin Baby who has played for the side in the earlier editions was bought back by RCB for a base price of Rs 20 lakh while Patidar, Mohammed Azharuddeen who notched up a hundred during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021 and made headlines, Prabhudessai were all bought for their base price of Rs 20 lakh by the franchise. Finn Allen was brought in as the replacement for Josh Philippe who opted out of the IPL 2021 citing personal reasons. RCB will also have the services of Daniel Sams and Harshal Patel. The two players were traded from Delhi Capitals to RCB. Harshal has also played for the Bangalore franchise in earlier seasons of the cash-rich league. Initially, it was thought that RCB have once again made a blunder after spending more than half of the money in the purse on two players but they did play well in getting the uncapped lads. Full Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Devdutt Padikkal, Finn Allen (wk), AB de Villiers (wk), Pavan Deshpande, Washington Sundar, Daniel Sams, Yuzvendra Chahal, Adam Zampa, Shahbaz Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Kane Richardson, Harshal Patel, Glenn Maxwell, Sachin Baby, Rajat Patidar, Mohammed Azharuddeen, Kyle Jamieson, Daniel Christian, Suyash Prabhudessai, K.S. Bharat Supports Staff Director Of Cricketing Operations: Mike Hesson, Head Coach: Simon Katich, Head of Scouting and fielding coach: Malolan Rangarajan, Batting and Spin-bowling coach: Sridharan Sriram, Sanjay Bangar: Batting consultant, Adam Griffith: Bowling coach, Shankar Basu: Strength and Conditioning Coach, Evan Speechly: Team physio, Navita Gautam: Sports Massage Therapist, Anand Kripalu: Chairman, RCB, Rajesh Menon: Vice President and Head, RCB, Soumyadeep Pyne: Team manager, Ajith Ramamurthy: Head of Content and Digital, RCB. Glenn Maxwell: X-factor or risky pick? The Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is known for his three-dimensional image in the cricketing circuit. Maxwell has the ability to score runs at a brisk pace, can chip in with few overs with the ball and is brilliant when it comes to the fielding. In 306 T20s that Maxwell has been a part of, he has scored over 6000 runs at an average of 27 and a strike-rate of 152 while has picked 110 wickets at an economy of 7.70 which is pretty impressive when it comes to the shorter format of the game. But the concern that the RCB management would have is his performance in the IPL. Being a part of three franchises, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Maxwell has featured in 82 IPL matches and has managed to score 1505 runs at an average of 22. Talking about his bowling stats, the Aussie cricketer has scalped just 19 wickets at an economy of 8.57. The Bangalore-based franchise would want Maxwell to turn fortunes for himself and the team with both bat and ball and give them fruitful results. RCB and batting firepower The Royal Challengers Bangalore are known for producing some exceptional performances with the bat. Whether it was Chris Gayle’s 175* against Pune Warriors India or it was captain Kohli’s form in the 2016 season where he scored 973 runs in the season that included four tons during the course, RCB have unfolded these kinds of performances on numerous occasions. Continuing their legacy, RCB have some of the most brutal batsmen in their ranks. Beginning with youngster Devdutt Padikkal who is in sublime form right from the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2021. He was the second highest run-scorer in the tournament after Prithvi Shaw. Next up is the young man from New Zealand, Finn Allen who is known for his aggressive batting and was among runs in the last few T20s that he played. Then comes the “Run Machine” Virat Kohli and his partner in record stands AB de Villiers. The two have been serving the RCB together for a very long time now and have notched up numerous records together. While Kohli can score big runs, de Villiers is capable of producing brisk knocks at any given stage of the innings. Apart from these batsmen, Sachin Baby, Rajat Patidar, Azharuddeen and Washington Sundar can also score some quick runs for the side. To sum up, RCB don’t really have any glitches when it comes to their batting unit and if the batsmen go all guns blazing, the opposition bowling line up would be under tremendous pressure. Problem of plenty pacers Daniel Sams, Kyle Jamieson and Kane Richardson are the foreign players in the pacers list alongside Indian seamers like Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini, Harshal Patel. Now, with only four overseas spot up for grabs in the line up, it is pretty certain that the bowlers will have maximum of two of these with one pretty evidently going to Sams who is a left-arm pacer and can chip in with some runs as well. RCB have anyhow been missing the services of a left-arm pacer since Mitchell Starc has been out of the scheme. So, if Sams finds a spot for himself, then RCB will only have one overseas place left in the XI. Now with only one slot left for the taking, it would be either Jamieson or Richardson who will find themselves a place in the XI. It is surely going to be a tough call for a team that has spent almost Rs 20 Cr in fetching the two players during the auctions. Nevertheless, as they say there is blessing in disguise, so is the case with RCB. With two front-line right arm pacer in its armour, the Virat Kohl-led side can nullify the void created by Dale Steyn after he opted out of the IPL 2021. Coming down to the spin bowling attack, Sundar has been one of the most impressive spinners when it is about bowling in the power play overs. He doesn’t really leak runs and can resist the batsmen in the initial stages of the game. Adam Zampa will miss the starting phase of the IPL season this year, Yuzvendra Chahal who has been a part of the franchise for a very long time now will have the onus of keeping the opposition silent in the middle overs. Neutral Venue- A curse for RCB? RCB begin their campaign against Mumbai Indians in Chennai and play the next two matches at the same venue which is relatively a slow track. The side will then move to Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Kolkata for the remaining matches. Mumbai and Ahmedabad will offer the tracks where the ball comes on to the bat while the pacers can get some advantage if they have the ability to create problems for the batsmen. With pacers like Siraj, Saini, Jamieson, Sams and Richardson in their ranks, RCB can easily dominate the opposition peppering them with some short stuff. While the pacers can extract something out of these tracks, RCB have batsmen like Kohli, de Villiers and Maxwell who can be dangerous and lethal at any venue. Kohli can stick around and hold one end, Padikkal, AB and Maxwell can push the paddle and accelerate the run rate whenever required. RCB will conclude the league stage in Kolkata. The track in the city might provide some help to the wrist spinners at that point of the tournament. What are the chances? RCB have always been one of the contenders of making it to the play-offs. Whether they make it through or don’t can only be judged after the initial part of the league but the names that they have in the line up have the ability to get some positive results for the side in the upcoming edition of the IPL. Probable XI Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (C), AB de Villiers (WK), Glenn Maxwell, Sachin Baby, Washington Sundar, Harshal Patel, Daniel Sams, Mohammed Siraj, Kyle Jameison, Yuzvendra Chahal

It was a challenging wicket for bowlers: Prasidh Krishna

England batsmen were on a rampage against the Indian bowlers on Friday in Pune after they chased down a mammoth total of 337 by 6 wickets and with more than six overs to spare. India fast bowler Prasidh Krishna who was playing his second ODI for India said that it was a batting-friendly track and had almost nothing to offer for the bowlers. “It was a very good wicket to bat on, no doubt. We scored 330-plus and they chased it down in the 44th over. It says it all,” Prasidh, who returned with figures of 2/58, said during the post-match press conference. “It was a flat wicket, challenging wicket for bowlers where the margin of error was very, very less… It was an onslaught, we got hit quite bad.” England started off the big chase with some brutal hitting after Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow stitched a partnership of 110 runs for the first wicket in 16.3 overs and before Roy departed for 55. Bairstow was then joined by Ben Stokes in the middle and the two hammered the Indian bowlers especially Kuldeep Yadav and Krunal Pandya all around the park to stitch a stand of 175 runs for the second wicket. Prasidh who eventually returned with figures of 2/58 in 10 overs said that credited the English batsmen for their efforts. “We did have a plan, we did talk about the way they were going about it. We tried our best when we bowled. There were a couple of chances that may have gone our way but we must give them credit for the way they played,” Prasidh said. Bairstow went on to score 124 during the course while Stokes missed out on a ton by just one run. Earlier, India after being put into bat posted 336/6 riding on KL Rahul’s 108 and some power-hitting from Rishabh Pant who notched up 77 off just 40 deliveries. Captain Virat Kohli too chipped in with a half-century. The three-match ODI series is now levelled at 1-1 with the final clash to take place on Sunday in Pune.

IPL 2021 | Team Preview: Will change in name bring the much awaited change in fortunes for Punjab Kings?

What’s in the name? Said someone, well that person needs to take a look at the Indian Premier League’s North Indian franchises. In 2019 it was Delhi Daredevils who changed to Delhi Capitals and now it is Kings XI Punjab who has changed to Punjab Kings. With Delhi, the change in fortunes did happen as it made to its first-ever final only one year later. Will the name change bring in good fortunes for Punjab too. The last season of the Punjab Kings could well be described as being a roller coaster ride with the team travelling on extremes. After winning the first two games, the Kings lost five on the trot before coming back and winning five in a row, making themselves a strong contender to make the playoffs. However, they lost the last two games and thus got out of the race. But now, it’s a new season and with almost a brand new team, the Kings would obviously like to change a thing or two from the past, that includes their approach towards a season. 2021 IPL Mini Auction: Punjab shopped well The Kings went into the auction for the 2021 season with the biggest purse for any franchise. They did make good use of that and got players that they wanted. They were in search of two quality pacers who could bowl at the death and they got two Aussies in Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith. Further, they needed someone at the top who could accelerate right from the start and was consistent in his batting and thus they went for the Englishman Dawid Malan. There was also a need for a late order flourisher who could also bowl a bit off-spin and getting the Tamil Nadu hitter Shahrukh Khan solved that problem of the team. Apart from the requirements, they also shopped for backups and in that package got two all-rounders Moises Henriques and Fabien Allen. Several Indians including fast bowler Saurabh Kumar, all-rounder Utkarsh Singh and experienced spin bowling all-rounder Jalaj Saxena were bought by Punjab Kings. Full Squad Lokesh Rahul, Harpreet Brar, Ishan Porel, Utkarsh Singh, Moises Henriques (O), Jhye Richardson (O), Mandeep Singh, Chris Jordan (O), Deepak Hooda, Ravi Bishnoi, Riley Meredith (O), Arshdeep Singh, Sarfaraz Khan, Chris Gayle (O), Mayank Agarwal, Mohammed Shami, Darshan Nalkande, Shahrukh Khan, Nicholas Pooran (O), Fabian Allen (O), Murugan Ashwin, Dawid Malan (O), Saurabh Kumar, Jalaj Saxena, Prabhsimran Singh (O) indicates Overseas Players Support Staff Anil Kumble - Director Of Cricket Operations, Andy Flower- Assistant Coach, Avinash Vaidya- General Manager - Cricket Operations, Wasim Jaffer- Batting Coach, Jonty Rhodes- Fielding Coach, Damien Wright- Bowling Coach, Ashish Tuli- Team Analyst, Andrew Leipus- Physio, Adrian Le Roux- Strength And Conditioning Coach, Naresh Kumar- Masseur Dawid Malan to the top order rescue? Punjab Kings were one of the top reams on paper last year. With the likes of Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul and Chris Gayle at the top, they were bound to get great starts. However, the team never really got that start as their skipper KL Rahul couldn’t score with the flourish that he had done in previous seasons. Even Chris Gayle took time while settling down. Too slow starts meant that they were not able to finish well either. Another reason for that failure was the dismal run of form that Glenn Maxwell went through last season. Nicholas Pooran was the only glimmer of hope. Thus the introduction of Dawid Malan is a step towards changing that approach and going for the kills right from the word go. Malan, although one of the mild English batsmen at the start of his innings has a career strike rate of 144 in T20Is and it goes along with an average of more than 50. Thus the 33-year-old being at the top would give some liberty for Rahul to build and anchor the innings the way he wishes to. Malan playing would also mean that either among Nicholas Pooran and Chris Gayle can be tried, Porran first and then carried on depending upon their form. This would therefore make the job of a coach and captain easy giving flexibility to the players. Australian pacers charge the Punjab pace battery Apart from the problem of aggressive start with the bat, another problem that the men in ‘Red and Grey’ faced, was their death over bowling. Barring a few matches in the latter part of the season, the fast bowlers went for plenty in the last five. This includes 82 and 89 against Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians. On average, they gave away more than 50 runs in their last five overs, that too when they conceded as less than 17, 24, and 35 in three innings. Death bowling for Punjab was a massive problem and to cure that they have got two really quick and on the money bowlers in the form of Meredith and Richardson. While the Tasmanian Meredith has an economy of just over eight, Western Australian Richardson clocks below eight, giving confidence that they are the right picks for the slots. Apart from being economical, the Aussies are also wicket-taking in nature, with Richardson coming on the back of a scintillating BBL season in which he took 29 wickets in 17 innings. Meredith, might not have been the top-notch wicket-takers with just 16 wickets in his kitty, but he sure was a force to reckon with and a man to go to in crunch situations. The signing of these two pacers will also act as a confident booster for the Indian pacers like Mohammad Shami, Ishan Porel and Arshdeep Singh, who are going to play an important part in the Kings’ campaign. Neutral venues: A blessing in disguise for Punjab? This IPL season could be called a blessing in disguise for the Punjab side. As part of the neutral venue concept in which no team play at its home ground, the Kings from the north would be playing maximum of their league stage games at venues such as Wankhede, Motera and M. Chinnaswamy, all of which are known for their pitches, where the ball comes on to the bat and the pacers can take advantage of the bounce if they have the ability to do that. Punjab play three games at Wankhede, four at Motera and the last five at M. Chinnaswamy, with only two of their games to be staged at MA Chidamabaram in Chennai, a considerably slow track. With tracks supporting the ball coming on to the bat, the Kings batsmen in Malan, Rahul and Gayle would back themselves to steer the team home from any situation. And the fact that the ball would also get consistent bounce would make their pacers a better prospect than other bowlers o those pitches. The form of skipper Rahul Rahul, 28, has slowed down in his batting strike rate over the years as far as IPL is concerned. From a season strike rate of 158 in 2018, the Karnataka born fell to 129 last year. He is making runs no doubt, but are those runs providing any benefit to the team? It is a question that both Rahul and the management need to ask each other. As far as his form is concerned then in the T20Is, it hasn’t been where his international rankings. Now, the number five ranked T20I batsman could only score only on fifty in his last seven innings. In fact, he was drooped in the last game of India against England as he could only make 15 runs in the last four innings. Although in the last two ODIs, he has hit form, scoring a half-century and a century in the process. This has given some hope to the Punjab fans, but only time is gonna prove whether it will be the Rahul of 2018 edition that Punjab needs or the Rahul of last season, only whose number of runs (scored) is desired, but not the manner in which they were scored. What are the chances? With such a huge squad, which is extremely talented and provides for the backup player for almost every first-choice player, Punjab are once again looking like a side that is destined to finish in the top four. But that is only on the paper, where they finish in reality could only be said after the initial round of the 2021 IPL season. Best Possible XI Lokesh Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Dawid Malan, Mandeep Singh, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammad Shami, Murugan Ashwin, Riley Meredith
