Iceland Cricket, known for their subtle humorous takes on contemporary cricketing affairs, have trolled the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) with a hilarious post on social media. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Iceland Cricket mocked the two elite cricket boards for their recent takes on national selection for the upcoming 2023 World Cup in India.

Iceland brings up Samson, Roy snubs with hilarious joke

India’s perennial underachieving batsman Sanju Samson, who averages nearly 56 in ODIs, was ruled out of team’s 15-player squad for the 2023 World Cup. The BCCI selection committee decided to back Suryakumar Yadav instead, despite his recent struggles with the bat in 50-overs internationals.

Senior English batsman Jason Roy, who was an integral part of his side’s 2019 World Cup triumph at home, has also been sidelined from his country’s title-defence next month. Harry Brook was drafted into the squad as Roy’s replacement by ECB’s national selectors.

At a time when fans of Sanju Samson and Jason Roy are expressing their rage over their respective board’s decisions, Iceland Cricket have mocked both BCCI and ECB for ignoring the two batting talents from cricket’s upcoming carnival.

The Icelandic Cricketing Association took to X and jokingly undertook a responsibility of finding any possible distant relatives or ancestors of the two cricketers within their country, in a bid to rope Samson and Roy for potential national contracts.

Sanju Samson played the last of his 13 ODIs for Team India back in August with a match against West Indies in Tarouba. The elegant wicketkeeper-batsman clubbed a sparkling 51 in the game, and paved way for India’s 200-run series-clinching win over the hosts.

Samson averages a staggering 55.71 in ODIs, and his World Cup 2023 exclusion has ignited much debate among fans and former Indian cricketers.

Jason Roy, on the other hand, was also ignored by the ECB from England’s pre-World Cup 2023 preparatory series at home against New Zealand. The dynamic opener last featured in an ODI for England back in March this year.
