Pakistan batter Babar Azam didn't have the best of starts to the Champions Trophy 2025 preparation as he could only manage 10 (23) in the first match of the Tri-Nation series, facing New Zealand on Saturday, February 8, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
The ace batter continued to disappoint in what has been a poor home season in 2025 so far. Pakistan fans came in large numbers to see their hero play but left disappointed as Babar got out cheaply to Michael Bracewell in the last ball of the powerplay.
Earlier, on the back of a stunning century from Glenn Phillips, New Zealand posted a total of 330/6 in fifty overs. After opting to bat first, the kiwis had a decent start but lost two early wickets inside the powerplay before Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings with a crucial partnership.
Phillips took control in the second half of the innings as he was at his aggressive best and completely destroyed the Pakistani bowling. He went on to score his maiden ODI century in just 72 balls, taking New Zealand to a formidable total.
Chasing the target, Pakistan had a watchful start with Fakhar Zaman mostly controlling the proceedings. Babar, on the other hand, struggled to get going and was dismissed by Bracewell in the last ball of the powerplay.
The right-arm offie bowled one on the good length which held a bit on the surface and took Babar by a surprise who was looking to play it through the off-side but was forced to play it on the air towards mid-wicket and Glenn Phillips, fielding at short mid-wicket, diving to his right completed a fantastic catch.
Following Babar’s dismissal, fans took to social media and reacted to what was another poor day in the office for the batter.

However, Fakhar Zaman continued his onslaught as the southpaw went on to score 84 off 69, giving Pakistan a strong foundation to their 331-run chase. At the time of writing this, Pakistan lost three quick wickets and might have just given New Zealand the much needed opening to defend their total.
