He is a brilliant leader: Morgan backs Stokes for England’s Test captaincy

With England's red-ball captaincy position still vacant, the team's fate lies at a crossroads at the moment.

After a series of humiliating Test losses, Joe Root abruptly announced his resignation from captaincy. Ben Stokes, who served as the vice-captain, is speculated to take on the new role. However, the star all-rounder has expressed that he has no ambition to become Root's successor in the past.

The 30-year-old took a six-month break from cricket to prioritise his mental well being and recover from an injured finger. Due to this, cricket pundits voiced that Stokes needs to be at his best 'mentally' and 'physically' to be the captain that England needs.

Several England, Cricket Board officials have stated that Stokes is the ideal candidate and the obvious choice since he has worthwhile experience leading the team alongside the former captain Joe Root.

Many have also raised concerns stating that an all-rounder may not be the right choice for captaincy; since, in the past, all-rounders Andrew Flintoff and Ian Botham could not cope with the pressures of captaincy.

But the popular vote rests with Stokesy, given his phenomenal track record as a cricketer.

England T20 and ODI captain Eoin Morgan expressed that Ben Stokes is the prime choice for the Test captaincy. He also stated that he was more than happy with his current job as the white ball captain and that he would be no good in the red-ball format.

Few even called for Morgan to take on the Test captaincy, but the T20 and ODI skipper downright declined any speculation.

Morgan played his last Test match 10 years ago and has since been concentrating on his career in the game's shorter formats.

"Ben is a fantastic player, a brilliant leader, though he doesn't need to have the captain's armband to lead as he does," Morgan said.

Captain Morgan affirmed that his career is firmly focused on World Cups. However, he believes that Ben is a fantastic player and a brilliant leader. And that even though he considers the red ball captaincy to be a big ask, Ben Stokes is the right person for it.
