As per emerging reports, Australia's swashbuckling allrounder Glenn Maxwell might make his much-awaited Test comeback in the upcoming away series against Sri Lanka in February next year.

Recently, Australia announced their squads for the white-ball tour of the UK where they will be up against England and Scotland.

While Pat Cummins was excluded from both teams, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc found themselves out of the ODI squad led by Mitchell Marsh.

Maxwell to return for SL Tests next year

According to The Age, Maxwell and Starc were, in fact, rested for the UK ODI leg to keep themselves fresh for the upcoming assignments.

The report states that Maxwell is well in contention for the spin all-rounder's role in Sri Lanka Tests next year, considering his ability to chip in with some useful off-spin besides scoring brisk runs down the order.

Head to open, Handscomb and Inglis to replace Marsh and Carey?

The report also claims that Australia will bring in Travis Head as the new Test opener after David Warner's retirement. As a result, Steve Smith could be demoted to his preferred slot in the middle order.

Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb and Josh Inglis will likely replace Mitchell Marsh and Alex Carey down the order.

Matthew Kuhnemann, who was impressive in the India Tests, will likely be picked as the spinner alongside Nathan Lyon, with Adam Zampa and Mitchell Swepson contesting for an additional spinner's slot.
