UP Warriorz (UPW) have roped in Australia's young top-order batter Georgia Voll as a replacement for Chamari Athapaththu. The Sri Lankan veteran will miss the final phase of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 due to national duties.
UP Warriorz Bring in Georgia Voll as Replacement for Chamari Athapaththu
Chamari Athapaththu was initially set to feature in UPW’s campaign until February 26, playing her last game against Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru, which ended in a defeat for the Warriorz.
With her now jetting off for Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand, the team needed fresh firepower and they’ve turned to 21-year-old Voll to fill the void.
The name Georgia Voll might not ring bells just yet but make no mistake as this Aussie youngster packs a punch. She’s still in the early days of her international career, having played just three T20Is since her debut against England in January.
However, if her WBBL 2024-25 numbers are anything to go by, UPW may have just pulled off a steal. Playing for Sydney Thunder, Voll was their second-highest run-getter as she amassed 330 runs at a strike rate of 144.
She was instrumental in getting the Thunder to the WBBL Challenger, only to see them fall short against Brisbane Heat. If that’s not enough to impress, she smashed a century in just her second ODI against India last December and finished as the leading run-scorer of the series with 173 runs at an average of 86.50. With those numbers, it's clear that Voll means business.
What This Means for UP Warriorz?
UP Warriorz haven’t had the smoothest run this season. Sitting fourth on the five-team WPL points table, they have managed to grab just two wins so far from five matches. Voll’s inclusion could give their batting the muscle they need to turn things around.
With Lucknow hosting its first game on March 3 between UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants, the timing couldn’t be better. Voll brings a fearless approach to batting, and if she finds her groove, she could be the game-changer UPW desperately needs.
