India’s assistant coach and Gautam Gambhir’s deputy, Ryan Ten Doeschate, is looking forward to shaping the Indian batting lineup formidable against spin, an area which has been a growing concern in recent times.

The Indian cricket team, one of the finest sub-continent teams in the world, has lately been struggling to adapt to spin bowling.

In the recently concluded ODI series against Sri Lanka, India lost as many as 27 wickets to spin. This unwanted record prompted captain Rohit Sharma to formally address the shortcomings as an area of concern.

Having said that, to resolve the issue, BCCI appointed former Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coach alongside Abhishek Nayar in the coaching staff led by Gautam Gambhir.

Ten Doeschate Admits His Mistake

After his maiden assignment in Sri Lanka, Ryan ten Doeschate revealed that he overlooked the challenge of helping Indian batters get better against spin.

"One of the challenges I wasn't expecting and I kind of overlooked is the playing of spin by Indian batters. We got undone in Sri Lanka," Ryan told TalkSport Cricket.

Ryan added that India’s mindset in the past few years has changed as they are desperate to prevail in overseas conditions, including Australia and England.

"The mindset of India has been such that they've been so desperate to do well overseas. The focus has moved to doing well in Australia, England [so] that we've kind of let playing spin, which was always a strength of the Indian team, fall back a little bit."

However, in the process of achieving overseas success, the men in blue lost their focus on playing quality spin. Nonetheless, the ex-cricketer is here to change that mindset and ensure India is back to being the best-performing nation against spin.

"That's one thing I'm looking forward to helping with, getting to that position where Indians are the best players of spin in the world again," he added.

Also, Ryan Ten Doeschate revealed that his coaching style would be more preparation-centric as he would focus less on technical aspects.

"[It's about] throwing ideas out there, de-briefing and keeping the mental space really good. That's going to be really important," he concluded.

His job will be to get the players in the right mindset and throw out his ideas.
