England's leading pacer, Reece Topley was penalised by the ICC for breach of player code of conduct. He was forced out from the first T20I against West Indies following a knee injury, and in displeasure, he took the chair and hit it onto the handrail.
England registered a comprehensive win against West Indies in the first T20I after Phil Salt registered a century in a 183-run chase. However, the visitors suffered a significant injury setback as fast bowler Reece Topley had to walk out of the field after the rain delay.
Reece Topley had bowled 2.4 overs and leaked 26 runs before a niggle in right knee ruled him out for the remainder of the contest. Topley tried his best to continue his spell, but his physical fitness was not up to the mark, and he reluctantly walked off the field in frustration.
Reece Topley fined for violent actions
Topley's international career has already been hampered significantly by injuries in the past when he missed the 2023 ODI World Cup as well as the 2022 T20 World Cup due to the two different injury issues.
Hence, this setback tested Reece Topley's patience as he violently picked up a chair and smashed it on his way back to the pavilion in Barbados. However, ICC noted Topley's actions and the match referee imposed a fine for Level 1 breach of the ICC's Code of Conduct, as per article 2.2, related to "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match."
Reece Topley, meanwhile, accepted the sanctions and has been asked to pay a fine of 15% of his match fees. In addition to the financial penalty, Topley also received a demerit point. Topley missed the 2nd T20I with future participation in the series still uncertain.
England leads the series 2-0
After Phil Salt's heroics in the first game, England took the momentum in the second T20I to win a 7-wicket victory. In the 159-run chase, Jos Buttler unleashed carnage with 83 off 45 balls, including 6 sixes and 8 boundaries. Liam Livingstone also added 23 runs off 11 balls as England wrapped up a stunning chase with 14.5 overs to take a 2-0 lead in the 5-game series.
