In a significant development, New Zealand’s star batter Kane Williamson faced another setback after going unsold in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025 Draft held in Lahore on Monday (January 13). The Kiwi batter, placed in the Platinum category, failed to attract any bids, despite 10 players being picked from the same bracket. Kane Williamson has struggled to secure spots in T20 franchises recently. It is important to mention that, in November 2024, he also went unsold in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
Kane Williamson Goes Unsold In PSL Draft
Kane Williamson has been going through a difficult phase recently. The 34-year-old batter, whose lower strike rate and conservative style of play in the T20 format are often cited as reasons for his diminishing appeal in franchise cricket.
Known for his technical mastery in Tests and ODIs, Williamson has struggled to adapt to the aggressive and high-scoring demands of T20 leagues.
Another reason that Williamson went unsold could also be related to his Fitness. He has faced several multiple injuries in the recent time. Notably, he did not feature in any T20I games for New Zealand in 2023 and only played two matches in the T20 World Cup cycle from 2022 to 2024.
His injuries have caused him to miss games across all formats, which ultimately affected his standing, contributing to him going unsold in the PSL draft.
The simultaneous scheduling of the IPL and PSL has prompted several players to choose one league over the other, with Williamson joining a list of unsold players from the IPL opted to go for the PSL draft. Australian opener David Warner, among others, also registered for PSL after being overlooked in the IPL auction.
His exclusion from the Platinum round has undoubtedly raised several eyebrows, especially considering his status as one of the modern greats. However, it is important to mention that Williamson has played 93 T20Is for New Zealand. He has scored 2,575 runs at an average of 33.44.
