England's limited-overs coach Matthew Mott has asked fringe players of the team to perform and claim their spot for the T20 World Cup. Even though the tournament is just three months away, he said any plans to fill slots had not been finalised yet.
After England's win over India in the third T20I, Mott said:
"I don't think [the World Cup squad] is all locked in yet. We've got a fair idea of what we think the right make-up is, but you want players to come in and perform and really warrant that spot. It's still open for a lot of players and that's why we are having looks at different combinations and trying to learn."
Reece Topley, who starred in England's 17-run win over the 'Men in Blue', rose to the occasion ahead of the main event. Having featured in just 12 T20Is for his country since his debut in 2015, it took him seven years to deliver breakthrough performance in the format.
The left-arm speedster claimed the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer during his economical four-over spell in a high-scoring Trent Bridge game. He was also adjudged as the 'Player of the Match' in a game that featured over 400 runs in 40 overs.
