Former England captain Alec Stewart has lost his wife, Lynn, to breast cancer. The tragic development follows her 12-year long battle with the disease.
Lynn’s demise was announced by Surrey ahead of the fourth day of their Division One County Championship 2024/25 match against Hampshire at The Oval. Led by Rory Burns, a star-studded lineup is wearing black armbands as a sign of respect.
In addition to a post across Surrey’s social media platforms, flags were flown at half-mast above the Micky Stewart Members Pavilion on Monday. Notably, Micky is Lynn’s father-in-law, who played eight Tests for England between 1962-1964. Interestingly, both Micky and Alex represented the club for a cumulative four decades.
Surrey Offer Condolences to Lynn Stewart
Oli Slipper, Surrey Chairman, offered condolences to the Stewart family in an official statement. Besides Alec, Lynn is survived by son Andrew and daughter Emily.
“The sincere condolences of everyone at Surrey County Cricket Club are with Alec and the whole Stewart family. Our very best wishes are with the family and we will continue to offer any support to them that we are able to. In the meantime, we ask that people respect their privacy at this difficult time,” Slipper said in a statement.
Following the successful culmination of his playing career, Alec joined Surrey in the capacity of Director of Cricket. However, citing Lynn’s health, which required her to undergo chemotherapy sessions, he relinquished the role only to start working as Surrey’s High-Performance Cricket Adviser January onward.
“There are bits and pieces that have crept up recently. It's never going away. It's managing it. It is two weeks on and two weeks off with chemo and the oncologist has said we will attack it with vigour. And hopefully make life more pleasant. So, it's just managing it really, dealing with it, which is what we've always done. She's the brave one,” Stewart had told The Telegraph last year.
One of the six players to have represented England over 300 times in international cricket, Alec Stewart is also their sixth-highest run-scorer across formats.
