ENG vs IND | ECB launches investigation into racism allegations by Indian fans during Edgbaston Test

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are having a tough time clamping down on racial incidents, which have been cropping up within the system lately.

Now, it has come to light that on Day 4 of the fifth and final Test at Edgbaston, a certain section of Indian fans were subjected to racial abuse.

Several videos of the same can be seen circulating on Twitter and the internet. Following multiple claims, the ECB have launched an investigation and are in touch with local authorities.

Their statement read, "We are very concerned to hear reports of racist abuse at today's Test match. We are in contact with colleagues at Edgbaston who will investigate. There is no place for racism in cricket. Edgbaston has been working hard to create a safe and inclusive working environment".

This is not the first time in recent years that we have seen cases of racism take place during India's match.

In 2021, Mohammed Siraj and a few Indian players were also attacked with racial remarks during the Sydney Test, where authorities had to remove people from the ground.

The Edgbaston cricket ground, which is home to the Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC), is also looking into these allegations.

"I'm gutted by these reports as we're working hard to make Edgbaston a safe, welcoming environment for all. Having seen the initial tweets, I've spoken personally to the gentleman who raised them and we're now speaking to the stewards in this area to establish what happened. Nobody should be subject to any form of abuse at Edgbaston. So, once we've got all the facts, we will make sure this issue is addressed swiftly," said Warwickshire chief executive Stuart Cain in a release.

Former Yorkshire spinner Azeem Rafiq, whose revelations about racism and bullying rocked English cricket, also expressed his disappointment.

The official handle of Edgbaston Cricket Ground did respond back saying, "We're incredibly sorry to read this and do not condone this behaviour in any way [sic]. We'll be investigating this ASAP."

Heading into Day 5, England are just 119 runs away from pulling off a record-chase of 378, with Joe Root (76*) and Jonny Bairstow (72*) in the middle.

India will look for inspiration after being ordinary in the field on the fourth day across departments.
