Former Indian cricket cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, celebrated his 74th birthday on Monday, July 10. The legendary batter, who was renowned for his magnificent stroke play, turned into a commentator after retiring from the game.

Relive Sunil Gavaskar's witty commentary from IPL 2012

Renowned for his uncanny ability to mix his observations with light-hearted banter, Gavaskar has become a favourite among fans worldwide. One such instance that stands out is from the 2012 Indian Premier League match between Mumbai Indians and Deccan Chargers, where an unforgettable spell of fast bowling from South African great Dale Steyn against Rohit Sharma left the latter in tatters.

In the post-match analysis, Gavaskar dissected Steyn's breathtaking pace and swing that left Mumbai Indians' batter floundering. The footage showed Steyn, after dismissing Richard Levi, delivering four consecutive balls that Rohit failed to connect, the ball evading the bat's edge each time.

In response to this stunning spell, Gavaskar found the perfect blend of humour and criticism. He began singing a line from an iconic Hindi song by Lata Mangeshkar, 'Dhundho Dhundho Re Saajna', in a jovial attempt to underline Rohit's struggle to locate the ball. The incident left his co-commentators, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Gaurav Kapur, in a fit of laughter.

However, Rohit's ordeal was far from over. When Steyn returned for his next over, he continued to torment the opener, beating the outside edge yet again. This compelled the Mumbai Indians' star to adopt a more defensive approach and opting to let the next three deliveries pass.

Rohit finally managed to counter Steyn on the final ball of his over, playing a front-foot defence to earn a single and bring an end to his tense duel with the South African maestro. He then went on to play a match-winning knock and helped Mumbai Indians secure a win.
