Delhi Capitals To Target Travis Head In IPL Auctions 2024? Ricky Ponting Reveals

Austalia's ICC World Cup 2023 final match-winner Travis Head could've made his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier in the year if not for his marriage, revealed Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting, who said he was keen to sign the rising left-hander for the franchise.

Speaking to 'Channel 7' in glowing praise of Head, whom the Aussie legend had backed for a hefty IPL contract on commentary during the World Cup in India, Ponting revealed he even rang up the opener ahead of the IPL 2023 to gauge his interest in playing for the Capitals.

However, with the cricketer's marriage coinciding with the first half of the two-month annual T20 carnival, Ponting couldn't convince Capitals to go ahead with potentially signing up Head for the tournament held in April and May.

Ponting reveals DC could've signed Travis Head

"Travis has done everything right to make sure he gets a deal this year," Ponting said as the build-up to the much-anticipated IPL 2024 auctions in Dubai.

"He would have had a deal last year if it wasn’t for his wedding. His wedding got in the middle of it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to pick him up at Delhi."

"I rang him and told him I was going for him in the auction, and he said, ‘Just to let you know, I’m getting married two weeks into the IPL'," he added. "He would have missed three weeks at the start of the tournament, which our owners weren’t willing to take that gamble on."

After scoring a century in the World Test Championship (WTC) final win over India in June, Head once again underlined his match-winning abilities and put paid on the Indian dream with a memorable knock of 137 in the high-pressure World Cup final run-chase in Ahmedabad.

The 29-year-old was always a bright young talent within the Australian circuit but seems to have truly come of age in the past two years across all formats. Pertinent to his imminent IPL deal, the cricketer, who previously turned up for RCB in 2016, boasts of 20 T20I caps for his nation with 460 runs at a strike-rate of 140.67 and is a handy part-time off-spinner.
