Capsey, bowlers shine as England outclass Lanka

England on the back of their all-around complete performance annihilated Sri Lanka by five wickets to kick start their Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 campaign on a winning note.

Capsey's blitzkrieg helped England overwhelmed the chase

Chasing the modest total of 106, England reached home in 17.1 overs, courtesy of Alice Capsey's 45-ball 44 run knock and breezy cameos from Sophia Dunkley, Natalie Sciver and Maia Bouchier.

A 107-run target looked like a cakewalk for mighty England but the chase began with a couple of early hiccups.

The experienced English campaigner and opener Danielle Nicole Wyatt (5) was the first to go down for the hosts. She was soon joined by Sophia Dunkley in the dugout as Ranasinghe struck in her next over again to clean Dunkley up for 17.

However, two top-order batters falling inside the powerplay didn't bother the hosts much as the young Alice Capsey stood firm and continued to defy the Lankan bowlers.

Skipper Natalie Sciver (17) and Maia Bouchier (21*) also played quick knocks down the order to help England chase down the total with 17 balls to spare.

For Sri Lanka, Inoka Ranaweera was the pick of the bowlers as she grabbed three wickets in her spell of four overs. Ranasinghe also got two wickets to her name.

England's stellar bowling performance restrict Sri Lanka to a paltry total

Earlier, a remarkable bowling display from England Women resulted in Sri Lanka being constrained to a paltry total of 106 for the loss of nine wickets.

Katherine Brunt was in her element with the ball as she drew the first blood for the hosts, removing Vishmi Gunaratne for a golden duck.

Sophie Ecclestone provided the next breakthrough for England, breaking the 33-run stand between Hasini Perera (18-ball 17) and Chamari Athapaththu (18-ball 10) by tidying up the former.

Sri Lanka were soon dealt with another big blow as the young left-arm pacer Freya Kemp rattled down the timber of the opposition skipper Chamari Athapaththu to leave them languishing at 38/3 in 7.1 overs.

The experienced right-handed batter Nilakshi de Silva then held her nerve and struck a 28-ball 25 to take her team to a fighting total.

However, her departure in the 14th over opened the floodgates as Sri Lanka lost the remaining wickets in quick successions to eventually finish off with 106 runs on the board at the end of the first inning.

For England, Sophie Ecclestone returned with excellent figures of 3/25 while the 20-year-old Isabelle Wong came out as the second best performer with the ball, fetching two wickets from three overs while conceding only 10 runs.

The left-arm quick bowler Kemp also bagged two wickets from as many overs while Katherine Brunt was the most economical bowler, having conceded runs at an economy of 2.67 in her spell of three overs and plucking one wicket as well.
