Big news for cricket fans! After 128 years, cricket is finally making a comeback to the Olympic Games. The sport will be played in the T20 format (the shortest and most exciting version of the game) at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Olympic Committee Confirms Six Teams To Participate
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed that 6 teams will take part in both the men’s and women’s cricket tournaments. That means there will be a total of 90 players in each category, with each team allowed to bring 15 players.
Cricket was last seen in the Olympics way back in 1900 in Paris, and that too was just a one-off match. After more than a century, the sport is set to return not only in Los Angeles 2028, but also in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
Interestingly, Cricket has recently been added to other big sports events too. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, women’s cricket was played for the first time. Australia won gold, while India took silver.
In the 2023 Asian Games in China, both men's and women's cricket were included. India won gold medals in both categories, showing how popular the sport has become.
How Cricket Made It to the Olympics?
It is important to mention that the journey to include cricket in the LA 2028 Olympics began in August 2021, when the International Cricket Council (ICC) officially pushed for its inclusion. The ICC worked closely with the LA28 Organising Committee, and in October 2023, cricket was finally accepted as one of five new sports for the Olympics.
