Brendon McCullum appointed England men's Test coach

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have officially unveiled former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum as the head coach of the men's Test team.

The ECB on Thursday confirmed the development on their Twitter handle.

In the past few days, McCullum's potential appointment was widely reported and speculated in the English media after the former wicket keeper-opener had informed those close to him that he had been offered the coaching role.

McCullum is currently serving as the head coach of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, and, according to Indian Express, he has handed out his resignation from the post to the top brass.

"He informed us that he won't be part of KKR going ahead as he will be taking up a job as England cricket team coach. A few days ago, he informed us during a team meeting," reported the Indian Express while citing a KKR insider.

McCullum is widely credited for New Zealand's surge in both Test and the shorter formats during his stint in the early-mid 2010s.

The former Kiwi skipper has quite a task at hand given the current status of English red-ball cricket.

Along with new skipper Ben Stokes, he will have to start with scratch as England aim to restructure their batting-unit.

The Three Lions have won just 1 Test out of their last 17, including humiliating defeats in India, Australia, and West Indies.

McCullum will kickstart his stint against his own nation, New Zealand when the three-match Test series gets underway at Lord's next month.
