Brad Wheal joins Warwickshire on a short term loan deal

Warwickshire County Cricket Club have signed Hampshire’s Brad Wheal on a one match loan deal for the Championship match against Surrey, starting today (Monday).

The 25-year-old could not find a regular place in Hampshire’s pace attack and made a loan move to Gloucestershire earlier this season. He has played three Championship matches this season, taking 9 wickets at an average of 28.88.

The Durban born cricketer, who represents Scotland in international cricket, played a big part in Hampshire winning the T20 Blast this season by taking 22 wickets at an economy rate of 8.7.

Speaking on the signing of Wheal for their away game at the Kia Oval, Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket Paul Farbrace said:

"Our thanks go to Hampshire for allowing us to make the deal happen."

"To be able to bring a talented paceman like Brad into our attack is a real boost to the squad ahead of our trip to The Kia Oval," he added.

The Birmingham club has been missing the services of Chris Woakes, Liam Norwell and Olly Stone throughout the summer. Woakes has been out injured and has not played a single first XI match for Warwickshire this season. On the other hand, Norwell, who made it to the England Lions squad last winter, has failed to remain fit and played only two red ball games this season.

Olly Hannon-Dalby is the only paceman, who is performing regularly for the Bears, taking 43 wickets in 10 matches so far. Nathan McAndrew is next in the line who has taken 16 in six matches at an average 41.3.

As a result, the defending champions could win only once in 10 matches this season so far. They are currently placed 8th in the points table, fighting to retain their place in Division One.
