Ben Stokes eyed for an ODI comeback, as captain! [Source: @mufaddal_vohra/x]
England cricket managing director Rob Key is considering options for the next national white-ball captain after the resignation of Jos Buttler. The English wicketkeeper-batter recently stepped down from England’s white-ball captaincy following his team’s disastrous 2025 ICC Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan.
While considering possibilities, Rob Key even claimed that England’s Test skipper Ben Stokes is being eyed as one of the contenders, even though the legendary English all-rounder has already retired (seemingly twice) from ODI cricket.
Ben Stokes On Captaincy Radar Of Rob Key
Ben Stokes, a crucial member of England’s 2019 World Cup winning run, announced his retirement from ODI cricket in mid-2022. However, the charismatic English all-rounder came out of his retirement to support his team’s title-defense at the 2023 World Cup in India. Stokes seemingly concluded his ODI journey once again as he has not played a single 50-overs international for England since the 2023 World Cup, with injuries playing its part too.
As it turned out, England cricket managing director Rob Key is eying Ben Stokes as one of the leading contenders to lead the national side in ODIs, as well as in T20Is following the resignation of Jos Buttler.
Key cited Ben Stokes’ stellar record as England’s Test captain, and described the all-rounder as one of the “best captains” he has ever seen. Addressing his retirement and a potential return, Key added:
“Nothing’s off the table.”
The England cricket team, under the leadership of Jos Buttler, recently sustained a 0-3 ODI series defeat to India. Moreover, the Englishmen also finished the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the bottom of the Group B points table with three huge defeats to Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa.
Buttler, who led England to 2022 T20 World Cup win in Australia, subsequently confirmed his resignation as captain to leave the esteemed position vacant for the time being.
