BCCI Plans to Monitor Retired Players' Participation in Overseas T20 Leagues

The apex council has authorised the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) office-bearers to decide on the participation of India's retired players in overseas leagues.

As per the current guidelines, any cricketer who is contracted with the Board must retire from all formats of the game, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), before being eligible to feature in overseas T20 leagues.

However, due to the rise of several leagues, many of which receive backing from IPL franchise owners, it is expected that an increasing number of players, who are not in contention for the Indian team, may choose to retire early and participate in these leagues.

In the latest developments, Ambati Rayudu, who announced retirement after Chennai Super Kings clinched their fifth IPL title, was set to play for Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket, a US-based T20 League. However, recently he pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons.

Meanwhile, the Pathan brothers – Irfan and Yousuf – Parthiv Patel, S Sreesanth and Stuart Binny will play the Zim Afro T10 league in a fortnight. The likes of Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan took part in ILT20 earlier this year.

While the apex council considered the matter, it was later decided that the office-bearers would assess all the aspects, including seeking legal counsel if required, and subsequently finalise the Board's plan of action, possibly by the next meeting.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah told reporters that the Board will decide on the policy in a month or so and then send it back to the apex council for approval. Here is what he said on the matter:

"We will be coming out with a policy to prevent the trend of pre-determined retirements. Once the policy is decided in a month or so, we will send it back to the Apex Council for approval," Shah said.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is in the Caribbean to play two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is against hosts West Indies in a one-month-long tour starting on July 12.
