BCCI Apex council meets today; three main agendas of Sourav Ganguly-led meeting

The Apex council of the Board of Control for Cricket in India is scheduled to meet virtually to chart out strategies for the upcoming series and other administration related matters. The upcoming tour of Australia and a planned home series against England will dominate the majority of duration of the meeting which will be chaired by president Sourav Ganguly, Secretary Jay Shah, and treasurer Arun Dhumal who are in the United Arab Emirates to oversee the facilities for the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League.

The council is expected to discuss the possibility of a shorter quarantine period after the arrival of the Indian contingent in Brisbane for a full tour comprising Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. As per reports, there will be as many as 28 players travelling to Australia for the multi-format series.

"Cricket Australia has drawn up a rough schedule which is yet to be finalised. That will be discussed and also whether there could be a possible relaxation of the 14-day quarantine. The BCCI has already appealed to the Queensland Health department for a possible relaxation. Even if there is an option to train, it will be great,” news agency PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

England’s tour to India that is scheduled to follow the series against Australia is likely to be the agenda number two for the Sourav Ganguly-led council. The BCCI is fretting over creating a bio-secure bubble for the English players like in the IPL and host the series in India. Reportedly, the board also has the option of hosting the Englishmen in the UAE just like the current edition of the IPL.

The agenda number three on the office bearer's mind will be the scheduling of the domestic cricket, on which majority of the players involved in the game depend in the country. There is a possibility of the BCCI going back to the zonal system in the Ranji Trophy to categorise teams into different groups in order to reduce the number of league matches but there are no definitive signs of what is on the BCCI’s mind.

IPL 2020: Bumrah 3 - 0 Russell - How Rohit Sharma and Co. cracked the Dre Russ code

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma brought his go-to bowler in order to counter Andre Russell in Friday’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders. The move paid off as Bumrah got the better of the hard-hitter. In the 11th over of the game, Bumrah aimed at Russell’s rib-cage - an area which the Jamaican is yet to fix. The batter isn’t the best customer against short balls or anything that comes shooting towards his body. However, Russell gave the impression that he is well prepared this time, having lost his wicket to the same pacer in the previous encounter. He hit a square-cut to fetch a boundary but kept shuffling away from the stumps in order to tackle a certain short delivery. Bumrah didn’t waste much time and bowled one short; Russell was caught off-guard while backing away and it resulted in his dismissal. The rivalry between the two continues to be a talking point. Bumrah has now dismissed the KKR batter on three occasions in 34 balls, conceding mere 44 runs. “I believe a lot in match-ups, we have got success as a team (doing it) - understanding the match-ups is important but we need to be instinctive at times. Krunal and Rahul also bowled to Russell, I took a chance with the ball gripping and turning, but I knew Bumrah was the go-to guy against him.” Rohit said post the match. KKR were in tatters at one stage. Pat Cummins and Eoin Morgan put on a rescue act to take the total to 148/5. Mumbai made light work of it, winning the contest by eight wickets and with more than three overs to spare.

You don't do it in the middle of the IPL - Gautam Gambhir on Karthik and Morgan's role swap

Former Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir has responded strongly to Dinesh Karthik’s decision to hand over the captaincy to Eoin Morgan. According to the former cricketer, Morgan won’t be able to change KKR’s fortunes in a drastic manner. According to Gambhir, the decision to change the captain in the middle of the season made little sense. In fact, KKR aren’t doing poorly in the ongoing IPL 2020. Despite losing a couple of games in a hapless manner, the side is still at the fourth spot with four wins and as many losses. “Lil surprised. He’s obviously leading KKR for the last 2 and a half years. You don’t do it in the middle of the season. KKR is not in that bad a position that someone needs to change a captain, so yeah little bit surprised,” Gambhir said on Star Sports Morgan has been a vital part of the leadership group at the Knight Riders camp. His rapport with coach Brendon McCullum has always been a talking point ever since the think tank roped him in for the 13th edition of the league. Gambhir, although, believes that a good relationship doesn’t guarantee success. He adds to it by saying that a coach must build a solid relationship with the captain of the side. “Cricket is not about relationships, it’s about performances and honestly, I don’t think Morgan can change a lot of things. He could’ve changed a lot of things had he captained from the start of the tournament. No one changes during the middle of the tournament. It’s nice to have a good relationship between the coach and the captain,” he added. Meanwhile, Morgan’s first match as the captain didn’t go as per plan. KKR suffered a heavy defeat in the hands of Mumbai Indians losing the encounter by eight wickets. They will be taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad next on Sunday, 18 October. Powered by Froala Editor

IPL 2020 | MI vs KKR: Hits and Flops as de Kock and Rahul Chahar lead Mumbai to a comprehensive win

Mumbai Indians seem to have found the number of the Kolkata Knight Riders as they once again defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by a huge margin of eight wickets with 19 balls remaining in the 32nd match of the Indian Premier League 2020. The game in Abu Dhabi had come under the limelight way before its started thanks to all the controversy built around the change team’s leadership from Dinesh Karthik to Eoin Morgan. In the match though, the outside changes didn’t turn any fortunes for the Kolkata-based side as they lost two in two big games. Morgan decided to bat first after winning the toss didn’t help the team’s cause as wickets fell at regular intervals to make things worse for the team. Had it not been for Pat Cummins and his blistering knock at the end of KKR innings in Abu Dhabi, chances were that the match would have ended way earlier than it did. If Cummins was a bright spot for Kolkata, Rahul Chahar and Quinton de Kock stood out for the Mumbai Indians. On that note, let’s look at the Hits and Flops of the game. Hits: #1 Quinton de Kock While many thought that the match was heading for a thriller, especially after the way KKR finished with the bat and also because of the past reputation KKR had made this season by defending low scores. But the South African captain had other ideas as he went into the attack mode right from the word go. De Kock made 78* off 44 balls with nine fours and three sixes at the strike rate of more than 177. He made sure that no chance of reprieve was given to the KKR at any moment. For his efforts and contributions, he was rightfully adjudged Man of the Match. #2 Rahul Chahar The Mumbai Indians seem to be building towards its perfect team as more and more youngsters are producing match-winning performances. Rahul Chahar is one of those youngsters. When the leggie came to bowl in, he not only took wickets but stemmed the flow of runs of the opposition, building even more pressure on the batsmen. It was this ploy of his that made him bowl excellently as can be seen from the figure of 2/18 in his quota of four overs. The two wickets that Chahal took were off consecutive deliveries as he got Shubman Gill caught in the deep while Dinesh Karthik got out LBW. #3 Pat Cummins Although from the losing team and he did give away runs during his bowling, it is Pat Cummins with the first fifty of his IPL career saved the KKR innings. Coming to bat at a time when all big guns of the team had returned to the pavilion, Pat Cummins showed splendid courage to take all the blowers to the cleaners. In his innings of 53 runs off 36 balls, there were two sixes and five fours. From struggling at 61/5 in 10.4 overs to getting up to 148 in the next 9.2 overs was courtesy of the 87 runs partnership between Morgan and Cummins in which Cummins was the aggressor. Flops #1 Dinesh Karthik In the news due to handing over his captaincy terms to Eoin Morgan, Karthik looked like a lost cause. Instead of firing on all cylinders, Karthik looked hesitant on the ground. It reflected in his batting too as the former KKR captain could only manage to hit one four of the eight deliveries he faced. The intent was lacking and so was the fire. It is exactly the right time for Karthik to show it to the people that he deserved to remain captain of the team. #2 Andre Russell Senior cricket journalist Boria Majumdar pointed how Russell has not been able to win even a single game for the KKR this season with his bat and how he was playing only on his reputation. Today also he played without any proper plan or approach and got out of just 12 from 9 balls. In the bowling department too, he wasn’t able to do much and gave away 15 runs from two overs without picking any wicket. While KKR would battle it out against Sunrisers Hyderabad to save their campaign in their next game, Mumbai would take on Kings XI Punjab to seal their positions in the playoff phase.
