Australia finished Day 4 of the ongoing first Ashes Test at 107-3, and will resume on the final day with the prospect of pulling off a memorable run-chase at Edgbaston. Earlier in the day, the visiting bowlers shot out the Englishmen for just 273.

The innings, just like the rest of the Test, witnessed much on-field chirping between players from both sides. Moreover, even the English crowd got in on the act as they were quick to remind a certain Australian player of a five-year-old incident, that nearly shook the cricketing world.

Fans chant in unison to mock Steve Smith

During the second English innings on the fourth day of play, the hosts supporters spotted Australian veteran Steve Smith fielding near the Eric Hollies stand in Edgbaston. A while later, the fans started chanting a song to remind him of his involvement in the infamous Sandpaper Incident from 2018.

Back then, the cricketer was involved in a ball-tampering incident with some of his Australian teammates. During a press conference a few days down the line, the batting legend broke down in tears.

The English crowd, who have repeatedly mocked Smith for the same, went a step ahead this time around by chanting a song about his crying incident. A legion of fans present at the stadium went:

“Steve, we saw you cry on the telly.”

Smith acknowledged crowd’s reaction with a smile on his face. English tail-ender Ollie Robinson, who was on strike at that moment, also shared a laugh over the rhythmic chants by his home crowd.

In the meantime, Robinson added some crucial runs in the lower-order alongside Stuart Broad and James Anderson. Their combined efforts stretched the English lead till 280 runs, which once struggled to get to 250. Chasing 281, Australia were off to a solid start, but lost a flurry of wickets as they ended Day 4 on 107 for 3, still needing 174 to win.
