On the eve of Rohit Sharma stand inauguration at Wankhede, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government is going to allot MCA a new land which can be used to build a stadium having a capacity of 1 lakh spectators.

While this development is groundbreaking for India and Mumbai as a whole, it is to be noted that if the new stadium is built, it will be the second largest stadium in India after the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad which has a capacity of 1 lakh 32 thousand spectators.

Maharashtra Govt. Green-lights Land For New Stadium

Notably, Mumbai already has the DY Patil Stadium and Wankhede Stadium which are popular venues for both Domestic and International fixtures. DY Patil has a capacity of 45,300 while Wankhede holds 33,100 spectators.

The addition of another stadium with such humongous capacity can turn the tables for Mumbai drawing in more international fixtures and important tournaments with lucrative sponsorships and deals. Speaking in the stand inauguration ceremony on Friday, Fadnavis proposed the vision for the new colossus.

"Last year, Kale and Ajinkya Naik had come to me with a request that the MCA needed to build one more stadium of minimum 1,00,000-crowd capacity. And now today, I'm assuring Ajinkya that if you come with a proposal, then the Maharashtra govt will give you an appropriate good piece of land for the MCA to build its own big stadium which can seat 1,00,000 spectators," Fadnavis said, as quoted by TOI.

When Will MCA Have The New Stadium Ready?

As per Fadnavis' words, if agreed upon, the new stadium will be in the works and should be completed by the year 2029 when MCA completes its 100 years.

"After four years, the MCA will be completing its 100 years. So by then, we should have our new stadium ready. And whatever the MCA needs to do in order to build that (stadium), we will provide that," Fadnavis added.

Acknowledging the Maharashtra CM's announcement, MCA president Ajinkya Naik was positive on the development of the proposal while elaborating on the location where the stadium will be built.

"We have already applied for a place in Amne in Thane district. There's a chance that we may get a place somewhere else too. But the place in Amne is in our mind," Naik said.

Naik concluded with his thoughts on the new stadium stating that he would be happy to build a large capacity stadium in any space the government allows them.
