The Gujarat Titans faced off against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The Titans won the game in the final over of the game. However, they did not look in much trouble while chasing 163 runs set by the opposition.

After a couple of impressive displays in the first two games, the Sunrisers looked rusty in almost all departments during this game. They won the toss and opted to bat first. After a steady start, their innings faltered, and the GT bowlers adjuted their line and lengths and came back strong to restrict SRH to a below-par total.

Travis Head, the Australian opener who started the tournament brilliantly against the Mumbai Indians, was particularly disappointing in the match. After his brilliant show in the first game, there was a lot of hope on the Aussie batter, but he threw away his wicket at a crucial stage and handed over the momentum to the opposition.

Why Travis Head's wicket was the turning point in the game?

  • Travis Head started off and looked good with the way he was playing. His presence could have kept the momentum with SRH.
  • Head did not allow himself enough time to see how Noor Ahmed was playing and played a rash shot at a crucial stage.
  • After the dismissal of Travis Head, the SRH batters found it hard to adjust to the pace and bounce of the pitch, and wickets kept falling at regular intervals, putting them out of the game.
  • Head played a brilliant knock against India in the WC 2023 final at the same venue. His presence at the wicket would have given the other batters an added incentive to use his experience. However, Head's dismissal put SRH at a disadvantage during the middle overs.

Travis Head's cost efficiency vs GT

Head had a strike rate and boundary percentage that was more than the team's collective effort. However, the moment he gave away his wicket and the number of runs he scored reduced his impact on the game. Head's impact score for this match was just 2.04.

SRH paid INR 6.80 Cr to secure the services of Head for IPL 2024. However, the Aussie opener missed the first game of the tournament, and he will thus cost SRH INR 52.30L for each game. His lacklustre performance cost SRH INR 55 Lakhs, therefore incurring a loss of about INR 2 Lakhs to the franchise.
